Stamina 4825 Recumbent Bike

The other week, my Aunt and Uncle were visiting from Florida.  As usual, the topic of health and exercise came up in conversation.   My aunt told my husband and I how she used to own a stationary exercise bike and how much she loved it.  However, she loaned it to a family member, who ended up giving it away, and now my aunt is left without a bike.   She has yet to find a simple bike since then as she can’t stand all the bells and whistles we consider normal for a stationary bike.

This got me thinking, why are the bells and whistles so important and why wouldn’t she want them?   Perhaps it is intimidation of all the controls, or perhaps she just wants to ride a bike and not worry about anything else.

However, I decided to do some research online for stationary exercise bikes.  Although I didn’t find an old time stationary bike that she wanted, I did discover the Stamina 4825 Magnetic Resistance Recumbent Bike which is the one I would recommend to her and anyone else.

What to Look for When Purchasing a Recumbent Exercise Bike

When I first started looking at stationary bikes, I found there were a few things which were important to look for when purchasing a bike.   I’ll list them below and explain each one:

  • Recumbent in form
  • Magnetic resistance
  • Multiple program settings
  • LCD display monitor
  • Tension knob
  • Seat and Pedals
  • Assembly

Not all exercise bikes are the same, so follow along with me as I explain each of these points in relation to the Stamina 4825 Magnetic Recumbent Bike.

Recumbent

The term recumbent literally means, laid back or laying down.  Of course you are not laying down while on this stationary bike, but you are in a semi-reclined position.

The benefits to a recumbent position is the fact that there is less stress and strain placed on the back’s muscles and joints.  This is one of the reasons this style of bike is often recommended by physical therapists for recovery.

Magnetic Resistance

Not all recumbent bikes use magnetic resistance, but all bikes use some sort of resistance.   A magnetic resistance bike uses magnets in the flywheel to create natural resistance or tension.   The closer the magnets are moved together, the greater the tension making it necessary to work harder on the bike.   The farther they are apart, the less tension exists, making it easier to pedal.   You can adjust the level of tension using the tension knob which is in easy reach on the bike.

Some bikes will use belt resistance, which can be rather noisy.  Using the magnetic resistance technology, the Stamina 4825 runs more smoothly and with much less noise.    Because it runs so much smoother, it also puts less pressure on the joints making the bike even more comfortable to pedal.

Multiple Preset Settings

This particular Stamina model comes loaded with 6 preset program configurations.   Each setting is designed for a particular degree of difficulty from very easy levels to very difficult.  Simply choose your setting and begin exercising.

InTouch Monitor

The Stamina 4825 Recumbent Bike comes with a user friendly LCD display called the InTouch Monitor.   It consists of a one button control pad which is fairly self explanatory with basic functionality such as up and down selections.

Stamina Monitor

The monitor is fixed on a console which sits low, making it unobtrusive to watching TV – a perfect pastime while exercising.    The LCD monitor provides the following information:  time, speed, distance, approximate calories burned, and pulse.  The pulse is determined by a sensor found on the handlebars.

This monitor has an additional feature called the pace guide.  This pace guide will determine if your pace changes during your exercise program.  For example, if your pace slows too much, it will provide notification on the LCD screen telling you so.  And likewise, when your pace has increased too much, it will also notify you letting you know to slow down.

The Tension Knob

This feature is worth mentioning because it controls the amount of resistance you will experience while using the bike.   The knob is located in the front of the bike, beneath the console.   You can use it to tighten or loosen the amount of resistance without having to stop in the middle of a program.   Simply adjust it whenever needed to your desired level of tension.

Seats & Pedals

Unlike a stand up bike, the seat is padded and also molded for ease of comfort.  The seat can be adjusted to various positions making it practical for nearly any user.   The pedals are oversized and weighted, which is a nice safety feature.

Size

As with any type of exercise equipment or household furniture, it is important to make sure it will fit in the desired area.   The Stamina 4825 measures 56 inches long, 26 inches wide and 33. 5 inches in height.   It includes leveling stabilizer caps which fit onto the bottom of the legs, which make it easier to move from place to place.  However, the piece itself does weigh around 71 pounds.

How Much Should You Expect to Pay for the Stamina 4825?

The Stamina 4825 recumbent exercise bike should not cost much more than $200.00.  The best price we have found is at Amazon which steadily provides great prices and services.  At the time of this writing, Amazon sells this bike with free shipping which makes it an even better deal.

What about the Warranty?

The warranty is provided by the manufacturer with 3 years on the frame, and 90 days on parts.

What Others Have to Say

Since the average rating is 4.5 stars out of 5 on Amazon, almost all the user reviews are positive.   Here are some quick comments some reviewers have stated:

“Exceeded my expectations.”

“A quality item.”

“Reassuringly stable and easy to use.”

“Good bike for home exercise.”

“Stamina has excellent customer service.”

“Extremely Happy!”

It is also important to mention that many of the reviewers who commented on the assembly process, stated it was easy to assemble – even with just one person.

How About Any Complaints?

As noted, there really weren’t many complaints, but there were a few.  One common complaint was that the tools which are provided to help with assembly were not of the best quality.   However, since the only tools needed are an allen wrench and screwdriver, most reviewers simply used their own tools instead.   Another complaint was that the shipping box would not be in the best shape upon arrival.  However, in the majority of cases (all but 1), the internal packaging was fine and no damage was done.  For the one user who had a damaged product, they called the manufacturer who would rectify the situation by shipping a new part.
